Client
Mútua dels Enginyers is a non-profit mutual benefit society founded in 1958, linked to the engineering associations of Catalonia. In 2023, it launched its Sustainability Policy, a strategic framework that integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria into all its operations, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It adheres to the UNPRI principles of responsible investment and has adapted its pension plans to Articles 8 and 9 of the European SFDR regulation, incorporating social impact and sustainability criteria. Furthermore, it holds the carbon footprint certification from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and achieved a 23% reduction in its emissions in 2024 compared to 2022.
Goals
SDG 11 | Cities and
sustainable communities
Promote urban infrastructure for reuse and shared consumption
We present real examples from Barcelona such as the Biblioteca de les Coses, the «Millor que Nou» centers, the Repara Truck or platforms such as Wallapop and BlaBlaCar.
SDG 12 | Production and
responsible consumption
Apply the circular economy hierarchy to consumption decisions and product design.
We teach the three circular strategies (eliminate, reuse, circulate materials) with concrete examples.
SDG 13 |
Climate action
Raising awareness about the climate impact of the linear model and promoting waste prevention
We show that plastic takes up to 500 years to degrade and that each discarded product generates emissions during its extraction, manufacturing, and disposal. With the “upstream innovation” approach, participants understand that preventing waste is more climate-efficient than managing it afterward.
What was done?
We delivered the workshop “Culture of Reuse and Exchange” to the team at Mútua dels Enginyers, facilitated by our co-founder Magda Cebrián. This workshop is part of our series of talks and workshops on circular economy and sustainability that we conduct in companies.
We begin by explaining why waste exists, emphasizing that nature does not generate waste and that the problem lies in the design of the linear economic model. We present the transition to a circular economy based on the principles of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating nature.
We work on the hierarchy of actions (rethink, redesign, reduce, reuse, repair, compost, recycle) and the concept of “upstream innovation”, prioritizing prevention over waste management.
We share practical examples both individual (buying second-hand, repairing, lending between neighbors) and systemic (Biblioteca de les Coses, «Millor que Nou» centers, Repara Truck, Bicing, Wallapop, Too Good To Go, BlaBlaCar).
The waste we generate in a very short time
We also showcased examples of business innovation: concentrated products (Flopp), reusable packaging (Almendrina), capsule-free coffee machines, KM Zero filtered water, and our returnable packaging system with IoT traceability, PaaSIoT.
We concluded by emphasizing that reuse is not just an individual action, but a culture that is designed from the ground up, starting with systems, products, and business models.
Why do we offer Sustainability Workshops for beginners?
We believe that the transition to a circular economy begins with raising awareness and educating people, which is why we design accessible workshops that transform complex concepts into everyday actions applicable in both personal and professional settings.
✅ Democratizing knowledge: we make the circular economy understandable to anyone, regardless of their prior education.
✅ Activate change from the ground up: when people understand the impact of their consumption decisions, they become agents of change within their organizations and communities.
✅ Connecting theory with practice: we show real examples and available tools so that participants can take action from the next day.
✅ Generate a sustainable corporate culture: we help organizations integrate sustainability into their DNA, starting with the people who make them up.
