The startup Go Zero Waste has developed Paasiot , an innovative system aimed at facilitating the implementation of reusable packaging models in the food and catering sector, in a context marked by the promotion of circularity and waste reduction.

Goals

Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible nº 11 Ciudades y comunidades sostenibles

ODS 11 | Cities and

communities sustainable

Reducing the negative environmental impact of cities through smart waste management

PaaSiot contributes to this goal by implementing smart dispensers and collection systems (IoT) in urban environments. This allows citizens to conveniently access reusable containers, reducing waste accumulation in cities and promoting a zero-waste model in local businesses and takeaway food services .

Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible nº 12 Producción y consumo responsables

ODS 12 | Production and

responsible consumption

Changing the paradigm from disposable packaging to a "Packaging as a Service" model

PaaSiot aims to decouple consumption from the generation of single-use plastic waste. Through traceability using blockchain technology and sensors, the project ensures that packaging has multiple life cycles, guaranteeing efficient resource management and fostering consumption habits that prioritize reuse over disposal.

Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible nº 13 Acción por el clima

ODS 13 | Climate action

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the manufacture and transport of plastics

By avoiding the constant production of new single-use packaging (which relies on fossil fuels) and optimizing return logistics using real-time data, PaaSiot helps reduce the carbon footprint of the food distribution chain. Less plastic manufactured and less waste incinerated or sent to landfills translates directly into lower CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Project description

Paasiot (Packaging as a Service IoT) is a system that connects a self-contained mailbox with smart packaging and a gamified app. This comprehensive solution efficiently manages the entire lifecycle of reusable containers, cups, and bags: from dispensing to return, washing, and reintroduction into the system. The system guarantees traceability through blockchain technology, hygienic safety, and a streamlined experience for both businesses and users.

The solution is currently in the prototype phase to validate its functionality in real-world environments. As part of this process, a pilot test is being conducted in Barcelona between March and June, with the participation of the Food Coop Barcelona cooperative supermarket and the La Peninsular restaurant, located in the Barceloneta neighborhood.

Go Zero Waste has developed Paasiot in collaboration with Barcelona-based companies specializing in technology and innovation, such as Lúcid and Sparsity Technologies, within the framework of the European project CESAM, aimed at promoting sustainable and circular solutions in the agri-food sector.

The project is part of an evolving regulatory framework, both at the European and national levels, that strengthens waste prevention, promotes reuse, and paves the way for more structured return schemes. In this context, Paasiot was created to facilitate the adoption of new, more sustainable consumption models aligned with regulatory objectives.

Go Zero Waste is currently working on validating and scaling the solution, and maintains open avenues of collaboration with companies in the retail and HoReCa sectors, as well as with agents interested in the development of technology-based circular models.
