Six fun team building activities

Team building is no longer what it used to be. Today’s most forward-thinking companies are investing in experiences that combine team cohesion, a genuine purpose, and sustainability values. If you’re looking for original, fun, and impactful team-building activities, you’ve come to the right place.

In this article we present 6 fun and in some cases impactful proposals.

Companies with highly engaged teams are up to 21-23% more profitable than those with low employee engagement. And engagement isn’t built in the office: it stems from shared, purposeful experiences.

1

Beach cleanup with team mobilization

Your team will be part of the solution, not the problem. For a few hours, participants collect waste on a beach, sort it by type, and learn about the different types of waste and how to prevent it.

Practical example:

· The DHL team organized a cleanup on the Barcelona coast. They sorted over 40 kg of waste and then held a reflection session: where does each type of waste come from? What can we do at home and in the office to prevent it? The debate was more intense than any innovation workshop.

Why it works as team building:

· It fosters teamwork towards a tangible goal, generates collective pride, and delivers a visible and immediate impact. Furthermore, it can be combined with impact data, certificates, and reports on avoided environmental footprints.

Perfect for:

· Teams of 10 to 200 people. Adaptable to Mediterranean coast, rivers or urban environments.

One activity, one team, one measurable impact. Our beach cleanups combine fun, environmental awareness, and impact data for your CSR reporting.

2

Showcooking of leftover cooking

A chef specializing in circular economy guides the team to prepare delicious recipes with ingredients that would normally go to waste: stems, peels, leftovers, “ugly” products.

Practical example:

· During an event for Astra Zeneca, several people helped Chef Berta prepare recipes using various products that in many homes end up in the bin.

Why it works as team building:

Creativity under constraints, teamwork, communication and… you get to eat. Gastronomy brings people together like few other things. Ideal for connecting with the value of zero waste experientially.

Perfect for:

· Corporate events, off-sites, company celebrations, onboarding.

The art of wasting nothing. Creative cooking to waste less and enjoy more, directly at your company’s offices.

3

Reforestation

The team plants native trees in degraded areas, in collaboration with local entities or natural parks. It is accompanied by a training session on biodiversity and natural cycles.

What is done in a reforestation?

  • What ESG criteria are and how they translate into daily management.
  • Regulatory framework: CSRD, ESRS, European taxonomy and due diligence.
  • The concept of double materiality and how to apply it.
  • First steps to prepare a credible and useful sustainability report.

Why it works as team building:

· It is a physical, outdoor activity with a lasting legacy. It generates an emotional bond with the company and reinforces the ESG narrative authentically.

Perfect for:

· Large groups, annual sustainability activities, carbon offset projects.

Getting out of the office to reconnect with what matters most. Our outdoor activities bring the team closer to nature and to each other.

4

Themed escape room

Teams solve puzzles and riddles in an immersive environment to “escape” from a room within a limited time.

How it works

  • Divide the department into groups of 5-6 people. You can choose escape rooms with scientific, historical, or mystery themes. There are in-person options as well as online versions for remote teams.

Why it works as team building:

Lateral thinking, communication under pressure, natural roles that emerge (the leader, the analyst, the creative). In 60 minutes you learn more about your colleagues than in months of meetings.

5

Collaborative artistic creation workshop

The team creates a work of art together: a mural, a collective sculpture, or an installation. No judgements, no hierarchies, just a shared creative process.

What is done?

  • A 4-metre mural where each person paints their “vision of the company for 2030”. The result ends up hanging in the office and becomes a permanent conversation piece.

Why it works as team building:

It breaks down barriers between technical and creative profiles, fosters listening and horizontal collaboration. Very powerful for teams going through moments of cultural change.

Every activity starts with good design. We define the objectives together so that the team building makes sense beyond the day of the event.

6

Nature scavenger hunt

Teams solve challenges and riddles distributed across a natural space, using maps, clues, and physical or mental tests.

What is done?

  • A scavenger hunt through a forest near Barcelona where each clue includes a curiosity about urban sustainability or the city’s circular economy.

Why it works as team building:

Mobility, strategy, communication on the move. Ideal for releasing accumulated energy after an intense day of work.

Why companies demand it:

· Because lived experiences are remembered. A morning collecting waste on a beach teaches more about the plastics problem than many hours of theory, and it also strengthens the sense of team and pride of belonging.

A workshop to connect with nature and learn while having fun. The natural environment as the best setting to strengthen the team.

FAQs

It depends on the activity, but most work from groups of 10 people. Beach cleanups and reforestation activities can accommodate up to 150–200 participants without losing experience quality. For cooking demonstrations, the ideal is between 15 and 60 people so everyone can participate actively.

The range varies depending on the type of activity, the number of participants, and whether it includes materials, catering, or transport. At Go Zero Waste we work with budgets tailored to each company, from half-day proposals to full-day sessions. The best option is to request a personalised quote.

No. All activities are designed so that anyone can participate, regardless of their level of knowledge about the environment or circular economy. Training and awareness-raising are part of the experience itself.

In addition to improving team cohesion, sustainable activities generate a measurable environmental impact and connect participants with the company’s ESG values. The team doesn’t just have fun: they come back with a story to tell and a shared purpose.

Absolutely. Activities such as beach cleanups or reforestation include quantifiable data (kg of waste collected, trees planted, CO₂ offset) that can be integrated into sustainability reports, GRI reports, or impact communications.

Beach cleanups work throughout the year, with particular impact in spring and autumn, when beaches have less tourist traffic. Reforestation activities are preferably carried out between October and March, when trees have the best chance of taking root correctly.

Yes, in fact it is one of our most popular proposals. For example: a beach cleanup in the morning and a resourceful cooking demonstration at lunchtime, using locally seasonal ingredients. A full day with double impact.

Summary and conclusions

Team building has evolved. Interior dynamics disconnected from day-to-day life are no longer enough: today’s teams are looking for purposeful experiences that reinforce the company’s values and create lasting memories.

In this article we have reviewed 6 team building activities that combine fun, cohesion, and, in the best cases, real environmental impact. Among them, three proposals stand out that Go Zero Waste has developed specifically for companies committed to sustainability: energized beach cleanups, resourceful cooking demonstrations, and reforestation activities with native tree planting. Three formats that work with teams of any size, adapt to the corporate calendar and provide quantifiable data for ESG reports.

Sustainability is no longer an “extra”: it’s an expectation.
More and more employees, especially younger profiles, value their company acting consistently with its values. Sustainable team building is not just an HR activity: it is a cultural signal that says a lot about what the organisation is like on the inside.

Sustainable team building is perfectly compatible with ESG objectives.
Activities with measurable impact —waste collected, trees planted, kilograms of food saved— can be integrated into sustainability reports and impact communications. Fun and footprint reporting, all in the same day.

There’s no excuse not to get started: there are options for all sizes and budgets.
From a cooking demonstration for 15 people to a reforestation project with 150, including an urban scavenger hunt or a themed escape room. The important thing is to choose the activity that fits the team’s current situation and the values you want to reinforce. The first step is always the easiest.
