Tourism towards Zero Waste Chile with the Lenga Foundation

Lenga Foundation
The Lenga Foundation team began its work in the Magallanes region and has expanded northward into the Araucanía region.
Its name is inspired by the Lenga, a tree native to the southern forests of Chile, which grows in cold environments, where shoots or saplings must join together to grow together, support each other, and generate a solid trunk based on collaboration.

Zero Waste Tourism Chile
Within the framework of the Zero Waste Tourism Chile project , financed and supported for the second consecutive year by GAIA LAC and Break Free From Plastic , they have developed a collaborative work with the Go Zero Waste app to give visibility to companies in the tourism sector committed to progressing towards Zero Waste in the towns of Pucón, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams.
All the detected and constantly updated projects have been incorporated into the Go Zero Waste app’s collaborative map, as shown below:






What actions have been carried out within the project?
- Location of businesses committed to Zero Waste criteria.
- Incorporation of the ventures into the Go Zero Waste app map (collaborative and constantly updated).
- Design and distribution of posters (flyers) to promote the project in Puerto Williams, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, and Pucón, the region’s main tourist destinations.
- “Toxic Tours” itinerary in collaboration with Break Free From Plastic.
- Informative talks.
- Clean-ups of natural spaces with volunteers.
Learn about the Patagonia Zero Waste Challenge
If you’re from southern Chile and want your business to be Zero Waste, join the “Patagonia Zero Waste” Challenge and help make a positive impact in our community! From September 9th to October 7th, 2024, download the Go Zero Waste app and participate in this challenge that invites you to reduce your waste and contribute to a more sustainable future. We’ll be raffling off three prizes of 160,000 Chilean pesos and three online Zero Waste consultations for entrepreneurs committed to caring for the Earth.
Steps to participate in the challenge and qualify for prizes
- Download the Go Zero Waste app and register. Access the “Patagonia Zero Waste” challenges. Upload photos showing your business’s efforts toward Zero Waste. Examples of actions include reducing plastic use, recycling, composting, and more. The more actions you register, the greater your chances of winning.
- Access the application form through the link available in the app and apply for the microfund to implement sustainable improvements in your business.

10 actions to help your business move toward zero waste. Join the challenge and share your actions to contribute to a more sustainable future!
- Compost your organic waste (e.g. share a photo of your composting system or a compost disposal certificate).
- Recycle your inorganic waste (e.g., show proper recycling bin usage or a recycling disposal certificate).
- Avoid single-use plastic (e.g., share reusable containers or other actions that replace the use of disposable containers and other items).
- Offer beverages without single-use packaging (e.g., share a photo of how you offer tap water, returnable or refillable bottles).
- Focus on local products and responsible consumption (e.g., when buying and selling products).
- Offer or purchase products in bulk or refillable formats (e.g., food or cleaning products).
- Promote reuse, repair or exchange actions (e.g. upcycling projects or exchange markets).
- Opt for products free of toxins or contaminants (e.g., in cleaning products or natural cosmetics).
- Create menus with local, seasonal produce and avoid purchasing farmed salmon (e.g., upload a photo of your menu or something else that shows your commitment).
- Conducts communication and awareness-raising activities on waste for the community, clients, and/or suppliers (e.g., clean-ups of natural areas, talks, and workshops).

Awards
- Three prizes of $160,000 Chilean pesos to implement Zero Waste improvement actions in your business.
- Three personalized online consultations, each lasting four hours, spread over six months, for three selected startups. This consultation will focus on five pillars: defining sustainable and achievable goals, measuring waste, creating an action plan based on reduction, reuse, and recovery, training and engaging the team, and disseminating actions toward Zero Waste.
- Zero Waste Kit for Businesses . Includes visual communication kits and ready-to-print educational materials so you can implement Zero Waste and educate your employees and clients about the importance of these practices.
- Promoting your business on our platform, email lists, and social media.
