What is Let’s Clean Up Europe

Let’s Clean Up Europe   is a joint action at European scale to raise awareness about the amount of waste that is dumped uncontrollably in nature and to promote awareness actions by collecting this waste illegally abandoned in forests, beaches, riverbanks and other natural environments.

Every year in May, an awareness-raising event driven by local organizations and companies committed to the environment is held: Let’s Clean Up Europe , a major event to clean up public spaces across Europe.

Public space cleanup events are organized throughout Europe and the  map can be found on their website.

Everyone is invited to help with whatever they can.

At the end of the collection, the waste is sorted and there will be workshops and activities.

Why a beach cleanup?

Beach cleanups are one of the best ways to protect our marine ecosystems while also contributing to our own health and that of the communities living near the sea.

This joint action is a symbolic way to show the world that change is possible, that it is possible to live without destroying the planet . By taking action on the problem, we will inspire thousands of people to join together and be part of the solution.

Benefits for the environment

  • Protect marine life: 🐠 Trash, especially plastic, is a deadly threat to marine animals who mistake it for food or get entangled in it. By removing this waste, you directly save fish, birds, and turtles.

  • Improve water quality: 💧 Waste like cigarette butts and plastics contain toxins that leach into the water, polluting it. Cleaning the beach reduces the amount of pollutants that reach the ocean, which benefits marine ecosystems and the people who enjoy the beach.

  • Restore habitats: 🏖️ Clean beaches allow coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs and sand dunes, to recover and thrive without the barrier of trash.

Objectives of a beach cleanup

  • Awareness: The main objective is to show citizens the magnitude of the garbage problem and its negative effects on the environment, such as the pollution of rivers, beaches, and forests. 😔🌊

  • Direct action: Promote the active participation of volunteers, associations, schools, businesses, and local governments in waste collection. 🧤🚮

  • Promoting the “3 Rs”: Although the action focuses on cleanliness, the campaign also seeks to encourage waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. It emphasizes that “the best waste is the one that isn’t produced.” 📉🔄

  • Data collection: Cleanup efforts are not just about collecting trash, but also about collecting data on the quantity, type, and location of waste. This information is crucial for taking preventive and corrective measures in the future. 📊

How to sign up for a beach cleanup?

Joining a beach cleanup is a great way to actively contribute to environmental protection. Below, I’ll explain how you can do it and give you some helpful tips to make the experience safe and effective:

  1. If you are in Catalonia, you can use the website of the Catalan Waste Agency to find all the organizations that are holding clean-ups and see if they are open to the public.

  2.  Organize one with your company or educational institution. Propose to the person responsible for sustainability, human resources, or CSR that the company organize an activity open to all its employees and their families. In this case, Go Zero Waste can help you with our beach cleanup service.

Tips for participating in a beach cleanup

Before you go, keep these tips in mind to ensure your participation is safe and productive:

  • Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable clothing, a cap or hat to protect yourself from the sun, and, most importantly, sturdy, closed-toe shoes . This will prevent cuts or punctures from sharp objects.

  • Bring your own equipment: Although many events provide equipment, it’s good practice to bring your own kit to reduce waste. It includes:

    • Reusable gloves: 🧤 Gardening or work gloves are ideal, as they are durable and offer better protection than single-use gloves.

    • A reusable water bottle: 💧 To stay hydrated and reduce waste.

    • Sunscreen and insect repellent: ☀️ If cleaning is in summer.

  • Safety first:

    • Don’t touch dangerous objects: Avoid handling needles, broken glass, chemical drums, or anything else that appears dangerous. Notify the organizers so they can take care of it.

    • Pay attention to your surroundings: Be careful of slippery rocks, the tide, and local wildlife.

  • Sort your trash: The goal isn’t just to collect, but also to recycle. Organizers often ask you to separate waste by category (plastic, glass, cans, etc.). Help with this task to make recycling easier later!

  • Be aware of the impact: Often, more is collected than you imagine. Use the experience to reflect on your own consumption habits and the importance of reducing waste. 🚮

FAQs

It’s a common action across Europe, held annually (usually in May) to raise awareness about the amount of waste we indiscriminately dump into nature. It involves cleanups of public spaces, such as Barcelona’s beaches, organized by local entities, businesses, and citizens.

Although collecting litter is the direct action, the main objective is raising awareness . It aims to show the public the magnitude of the waste problem, protect marine ecosystems, collect data on the waste found, and promote the “3 Rs”: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Anyone can participate. To join, you can check the action map on the official Let’s Clean Up Europe website or look for calls for action from organizations like Go Zero Waste

Recommended items to bring:

  • Comfortable clothing and closed shoes (to avoid cuts from glass or metal).

  • Reusable gloves (gardening type) to avoid generating more waste with single-use gloves.

  • Sunscreen and water in a reusable bottle.

  • Many events are organized by the organizers, but bringing your own kit is more sustainable.

Safety comes first: you must not touch dangerous objects such as needles, broken glass, or chemical containers (you must notify the organizers). Furthermore, it is important to properly separate the collected waste to facilitate its subsequent recycling and to be respectful of the natural environment (dunes, local wildlife, etc.).
