Les Cabanyes Town Hall
The Les Cabanyes municipality wanted to promote sustainable behaviors among its residents to influence both waste prevention and reduction, as well as local consumption. We designed the four-month “Move for Zero” campaign , which combined a series of challenges through the Go Zero Waste app and several in-person activities.
Les Cabanyes is a municipality located in the Alt Penedès region of Barcelona, with a population of 998. The project was funded by the Barcelona Provincial Council through the Environmental Education Services Catalogue.
Goals

What was done?
Selection of the challenges
In the initial meetings with the Councilors for the Environment and Citizen Participation, the challenges to be proposed to the population were selected, and new ones were also created to personalize the experience as much as possible.
Selection of the awards
Several types of rewards were chosen to encourage and reward participation:
· Electric scooter
· Product pack that helps with reduction
· 50 euro vouchers to spend at local businesses
· Reusable bag pack for all participants who complete at least one challenge through the app.

Digital and analog campaign
In addition to the environmental education activities and the app, a paper version was also designed for those who prefer to participate in an analog format.
The campaign’s aim was to give citizens the opportunity to participate in activities that contribute to reducing waste and promoting local consumption in a fun way, with activities adapted to all ages and levels of difficulty .
Any participant could share photos of their actions through the Go Zero Waste app, available in Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages.
Creation of a communication campaign
We designed a website to explain the challenges, prizes, and how the campaign works
. A press release was published in the main local media outlets
. Informational posters were distributed in municipal offices, on bulletin boards, and in local businesses. A series of social media publications were
designed and distributed through various municipal communication channels.
Campaign development
Following the launch press conference, the app’s challenges were made available to the public for a period of four months, and participation was encouraged through various channels.
Participation in the challenges was complemented by five in-person activities:
1. A storytelling session on the 3Rs for children at La Cabanyeta Nursery School (ages 0-3).
2. A clothing, toy, and book swap market , with the participation of all students at La Cabanyeta Elementary School.
3. A community waste cleanup at various locations throughout the municipality, where we provided all the materials for collection and subsequent separation in coordination with the cleaning team.
4. A workshop on sustainable menstruation, where more sustainable alternatives for menstruating people were demonstrated.
5. A family workshop on Christmas decorations using recycled materials.
Results
At the end of the campaign, a final report was submitted to the city council with participation data and all the photos received through the app. More than 200 people actively participated in the proposed activities, either by submitting photos of challenges or by attending the various in-person activities.
The “Move for Zero” campaign in Les Cabanyes helped raise public awareness about the importance of waste prevention and the value of local commerce as a facilitator of local, waste-free consumption, in line with some of the key objectives that municipalities share for achieving the 2030 Agenda.
Below is a selection of photos of actions taken by participants and shared through the Go Zero Waste app:
