Blanes City Council, with the support of the Girona Provincial Council, is carrying out a process of aligning its public policies with the Sustainable Development Goals and thus improving both internal and external management in a more responsible way. In addition, it is involving citizens, entities and the commercial network in achieving these objectives.
With this objective, the Move for zero waste campaign was launched at the end of October in Blanes, where 30 challenges were proposed to the population for the reduction and prevention of waste. More than 7,000 reusable containers and more than 60 gift cards with a total value of €500 were given to participants.

What was done?
Selection of challenges
With the Economic Promotion and Waste team of the Blanes City Council, several meetings were held to co-create challenges and actions that could be carried out during the campaign to achieve maximum participation and environmental impact.
Prize selection
To promote local commerce, it was decided that all prizes would be gift cards that should be spent in businesses participating in the campaign with values aligned with sustainability and local sales.
Creation of communication campaign
We designed a Web Page where the challenges, the objectives of the campaign and the possible prizes are explained. Afterwards, visits were made to the establishments to distribute information posters and flyers, and several information points were also held during the campaign.
inclusive campaign
In addition to launching the challenges through the App, it was proposed that the population participate in an analogical and experiential way through a beach cleanup organized jointly with the Environment Department of the Blanes City Council.
Booklet for participating establishments and markets
To fight the digital divide, a booklet was designed with 10 challenges that could be overcome analogically and which was then delivered to the city’s Economic Promotion department.
The booklets were distributed in the markets of Blanes and in the establishments that joined the campaign.
When a user passed the challenge in an establishment, they received a stamp validating the action and once the participant had overcome all the challenges they could, the card was delivered to the Economic Promotion facilities in Blanes.
Environmental awareness and action activities
On October 28, a waste collection was organized in collaboration with The Blanes Sailing Club and the Environment Department of the City Council.
In it, 150 kg of waste were collected both on the beach and at the bottom of the sea.
After cleaning, the waste was separated by category and taken to the recycling plant for treatment.
Media presence
The Move for zero waste campaign in Blanes attracted the attention of several media outlets that helped us disseminate the challenges and promoted participation.
